Walking is good for the soul

I looked at my ‘to do’ list this morning and then looked out of the window at the beautiful sunny day outside. I decided a walk would be far more beneficial than ticking a few chores off the never-ending list. I headed out into warm calm air under a blanket of blue sky.

With each step I tried to become more observant of my surroundings and the way each step felt as my foot touched the ground – attempting a mindful walking meditation.

For what felt like the first time in a while I noticed the tickling breeze and the dappled light through the trees, the gentle buzzing of bumblebees in the wild meadow and the sound of laughter in the park. Lovely sounds. I sat down to breathe it all in and what a feeling of peace!

Further into the walk I crossed a gushing river sparkling with energy in the sunlight. I stopped to breathe it all in and there it was again – a wonderful feeling of peace.

I am always reminded when I am out walking in the country, by the sea or even in my local park how being outdoors can bring peace to the soul and calm to a busy mind. I returned feeling inspired and energised,  the result of a mixture of fresh air, sunshine and some mindfulness practice. Happy days.
